As part of God’s family, caring for each other is a real privilege and a priority activity. As the Scripture says ‘if one part suffers every part suffers with it, if one part is honoured, every part rejoices with it. Now we are the body of Christ and each one of you is part of it’ (1 Corinthians 12 verse 26).
The prime place where every day pastoral care and encouragement takes place is in our Home Groups; that is one reason why we encourage our members to join such a group. In these small groups we get to know each other well which enables us to provide care for each other when we need it. Our home groups at present are:
Mondays @ 9am, Wotton
Leader: Jo Wharin
We are a small group of women who meet during term time in the manse. We start with a cuppa and toast followed by a bible study. We then spend time supporting each other in prayer. The atmosphere is relaxed and the structure flexible. We have a heart for other mums and local schools in the area. Babies and pre-school children are welcome too on the first Monday of the month when we meet at the church instead.
Thursdays @ 7:30pm, Wotton
Leader: Jan Shipton
We are a small group of about nine people. Basically we are family, and we enjoy a variety of activities such as worship time, accompanied by guitar, bible study and prayer times. We enjoy some social occasions, sometimes inviting friends. Most of all we want to enjoy God, and for Him to enjoy us.
Mondays @ 7:30pm, Hillesley
Leader: Arlene Greenwood
We meet in Hillesley and enjoy sharing a meal together first. We then have a Bible Study and prayer time, often using DVD resources. We’re a friendly group and try to support one another outside of homegroup too. We occasionally get together for a walk with our families. You don’t have to live in Hillesley to come although our heart is very much in supporting our village community in prayer and other practical ways.
Tuesdays @ 2:30pm, Wotton
Leader: David Wilson
We are a group of mostly retired people, meeting in Wotton in the afternoon. There is a relaxed atmosphere, we enjoy each other’s company, and on arrival we have a short time of fellowship together and refreshments. We seriously study the Bible and everybody can participate if they want to: the study topic and discussion questions each week are usually provided in advance so that we can prepare beforehand. David Evans and David Wilson lead the studies on alternative weeks. We also seek to encourage each other with prayer and support where needed.
Tuesdays @ 7:30pm, Dursley
Leader: David King
We meet for tea, biscuits (or cake) and chat with the aim of starting our study at 8pm. Each evening finishes with a time of prayer, for each other and for other current concerns. We try to finish at 10pm. Each member is given the opportunity to lead the evening, although there is never any complusion. We are a mixed-age group which allows for a good range of views and experiences. Most of us live in the Dursley/ Cam/ Berkeley area but this is not a requirement and new members are always welcome.
Wednesdays @ 7pm (for food) & 8pm (for coffee and learning), Wotton
Leaders: Clive and Rachel Hamer
We enjoy sharing life together in all its ups and downs. We start with a shared meal, which is a time to laugh and catch up. Afterwards we spend time discussing God’s word (often using DVD courses and bible study guides), reading the bible, worshipping, praying and encouraging each other. We want to be fully open to God, allowing Him to speak to us and to transform our lives. From time to time we like to go for a walk, visit the cinema or go out for a meal.
Wednesdays @ 7:30pm (2nd and 4th weeks), Wotton
Leaders: David and Margaret Barter
For those who have completed the Alpha Course to ask further questions and discover more. The group welcomes people, Christians or not, who want to consider what the Bible says, learn more about Jesus, and look at chosen issues from a Christian perspective. Our evenings are always thought-provoking and great fun! We start with coffee and cake before launching into an open, honest and friendly discussion. We end by 9:15pm, praying for any needs or concerns shared by members. We are open to all who might find such a group helpful.
Wednesdays @ 7:30pm, Wotton
Leader: Phil Green
About eight of us meet weekly. The usual format is a few minutes of chatting over a cup of coffee as people arrive giving opportunities to share any items for praise and thanks, or personal concerns. This leads into a period of prayer. Depending on how long that takes we then spend up to an hour in Bible study and discussion with leadership shared around the group week by week. Many members have met together for several years and shared joys and difficulties. Although we are a close knit group we welcome new people.
Wednesdays @ 7:30pm, Charfield
Leaders: Martin and Margaret Barker
We are a warm and friendly group of married and single people in our 40s-70s. We meet in Charfield or Kingswood. We normally catch up over a cup of team, open in prayer and then spend time studying scripture and sometimes share Communion. Our goal is to be Christ-like in our work places and community, our strength is prayer.
