Wotton Baptist Church History

The first Baptist church in Wotton was founded in 1717 and was built on a site close to the old grammar school.  This was demolished when school extensions were required and new buildings were erected in Rope Walk.  The church has met in these buildings since 1818.

The refurbishment of the main ‘chapel’ was completed in February 2009 to a very high standard, including under-floor heating and new comfortable seating downstairs.  The rear rooms, known as “The Cottage”, were renovated in 2012, and provide additional offices and a youth room. In April 2017 we completed a link between the church, cottage and hall, providing a larger fully-equipped kitchen, further rooms and additional toilets.

During the celebration of our 300 year anniversary, church member David Wilson gave an extremely informative talk about the history of the church.
